about

We first met Mulu Bekele in a cafe in Melbourne’s east, only a few months after she had moved to Australia. A mysterious e-mail out of the blue asked wether we would like to meet the Oromo singer, and being fans of her work online without even realising she had left Ethiopia, we jumped at the opportunity. Melbourne has a way of doing that. You can be researching your favourite artists from around the world, and a week later stumble across the fact that they are living on your doorstep.

Sometimes written as Muluu Baqqalaa, the Orominya singer is a legend in Ethiopia, where she has been actively performing and recording for over ten years. Making up the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, the Oromo an an ancient people, or rather collection of peoples, who have inhabited East Africa since early in the first millennium.

Mulu is not known to let an obstacle stand in the way of her creative direction. A fierce and proud woman, her collaborations and co-writes throughout the Ethiopian music industry have been prolific, rocketing her to the top of popular consciousness. Faced with life in a new country, zero connections in the industry and a language barrier to boot, Mulu is determined to find her footing in the Australian industry and continue her beautiful form of artistic expression.
