about

Hip-hop/soul singer Elsy Wameyo was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1999 and now resides in Adelaide, South Australia. Her music is comprised of soulful rhythms, influenced by her experiences with the Christian church both in Australia and Kenya, juxtaposed against energetic and poetic verses that aim to challenge the boundaries imposed by a life in contemporary Australia.

After being the first woman to sign with Adelaide hip-hop collective Playback 808, Elsy has gone on to perform alongside Printz Board, Maségo, Lady Léshur and Hilltop Hoods, as well as appearing at Groovin’ The Moo, Laneway Festival and more. In 2018, Elsy was awarded Young Kenyan of the Year, as well as being nominated for Best New Artist and Best World Music at 2018 SA Music Awards. ‘Outcast’ is the first single from her forthcoming debut of the same name. It deals with a recurring theme in Elsy’s work – the struggle of growing up as an outsider in a society that is openly xenophobic.

lyrics

(Luo)

Jopinyni neoko rwaka
Newawinjo matek, Jopinyni neoko rwaka
Wan nyithi nyasaye waonge pogruok moro amora
Obed mzungu, obed jarateng,
Wantee waromre embele mar nyasaye
Nyathina kik ideo, wantee wan nyithi nyasaye
Ibed jarateng, ibed jarachar, rembwa en achiel
Nyasaye to oruakowa wan duto

(English Translation)

People of this land did not welcome me
It was a difficult experience, people of this land did not welcome me
We’re children of God we don’t have any differences
Whether white, whether black
We’re all equal in the eyes of God
My child, don’t worry
We’re all children of God
Whether you’re black, whether you’re white, our blood is the same
God welcomes us all

(Chorus)

Seems like he’s living in the past
He’s just another outcast
Skin dark it’s hidden in a mask
Lights out

(Verse 1)

Dark skin that’s him with that grin
So bright next to that melanin
No care for his hair that fro
He was told it will never ever grow
His soul diminished, it’s finished
Speaking with an accent British
He sang with a different rhythmic
Flavour so different
Haters still listening
Though favour his vision
To acquire permission to lead his family tree
Standin’ up for his rights, equality
It’s his one and only chance opportunity
Impatiently trynna end this slavery

(Chorus)

Seems like he’s living in the past
But he’s just another outcast
Skin dark it’s hidden in a mask
Lights out

Seems like he’s living in the past
He’s just another outcast
Skin dark it’s hidden in a mask
Lights out

(Verse 2)

So I yell out brother, do you see me
I’m lost and blind have no vision
My intuition speaks
Then I yell out please sir, can you feel me
They tried to blame my decisions
I’m imprisoned and weak
Now listen
I had no other reason but to free my people slaving
Protecting what we still are still keeping my flag-waving
Reality’s that we are the epitome of a nigga
That mystical black figure

(Chorus)

Seems like he’s living in the past
He’s just another outcast
Skin dark it’s hidden in a mask
Lights

Seems like he’s living in the past
He’s just the other outcast
Skin dark it’s hidden in a mask
Lights out at last
Lights out
